This Lent, I am working through Walter Wangerin's devotional Reliving the Passion. I'm a little tardy getting in on the blog, but my intention is to share this devotional study in two ways...written reflection and visual response. Here are a few notes from the first three days, where Wangerin is offering reasons to walk the passion...
Day One
"...when we genuinely remember the death we deserve to die, we will be moved to remember the death the Lord in fact did die--because he took the place of ours...My death and Jesus' death, by grace conjoined."
Day Two
The death and suffering of Christ is a mirror, that reflects the ugliness of my life. "It shows me a new me behind the shadow of a sinner...when I gaze at his crucifixion...I see my death...done!"
Day Three
Twice in Mark's gospel, Jesus tells his disciples that he "will go before" them and that they will see him when they get there. Wangerin encourages us to "get there" by walking with Jesus through his suffering. "Master...Grant me, in the study o your story, both love and faith. Love will make me attentiveto all you do. Faith will make me bold to follow you. I beg to see you, O my Saviour! AMEN"
Starting tomorrow, I'll include contemplative sketches that I use to visualize a deeper meaning and may help you "see" something in it, too.
Thank you for sharing WW with us. He is one of my favorite writers. I love the 'real world' stories of his ministry, his failings and mistakes, his humanness and insight. If you have a few minutes, read 'The Pastor and the Thief' one of my favorites! http://walterwangerinjr.org/new_web/ec_details.php?id=60
